About Julian

St Julian’s Church was built over 1,000 years ago alongside the river Wensum in Norwich — at the time, the second most important city in England.

Julian lived as an anchoress (a hermit) in a cell attached to the church, from which she took her name. It was here that she wrote her book The Revelations of Divine Love, otherwise known as Showing of Love and also, simply, as Showings.

Julian’s hermitage was pulled down at the Reformation but it was rebuilt after wartime bombing. The cell is now the site of a shrine where people come from all over the world to reflect on Julian’s message and to offer prayers in her name.

The page Julian's Life and Work gives a brief sketch of what we know about Julian's life and the journey she underwent in order to create her spiritual masterpiece. In the Excerpts page you can get a taste of the depth and quality and her writing. And Julian Links provides some pathways for you to find out more.
